04 — Questions
Figures are estimates for guidance; confirm taxes with a customs agent before buying.
On top of the German price you pay ISV (from the car’s CO₂ and engine size, reduced with age), transport, the type-B inspection, the customs declaration and registration — and 23% Portuguese VAT if the car is nearly new. ISV is usually the biggest part, so the extras range from under €2,000 for an electric car to many thousands for a large petrol or diesel. Every car on this site shows its own total.
ISV has an engine-size component and a CO₂ component (Tabela A of the Código do ISV), a surcharge for some diesels, and a reduction for the car’s years of use. Electric cars are exempt, and plug-in hybrids with at least 50 km of electric range and under 50 g/km of CO₂ pay a reduced rate. Our free ISV calculator uses the same rules.
No. A used car — more than six months old and more than 6,000 km — is taxed where you buy it, so there is no Portuguese VAT on arrival. Only nearly-new cars pay 23% VAT in Portugal, and then you buy them without German VAT.
Usually a few weeks: transport, the IPO inspection, the customs declaration (DAV) and the registration. Many buyers use a transporter and a customs agent (despachante) to handle the papers.
No. The figures are estimates from advert data. The final VAT and ISV depend on the invoice, the seller’s VAT status and the car’s documents (the COC). Shortlist here, then confirm with a customs agent before you pay.
